It is hard to think of an hour better spent than one browsing through the first few rooms of the Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery. The collection of Italian Renaissance paintings is outstanding.

Take the stairs to Room 51 for works by Leonardo da Vinci and Cimabue. Keep going, and in Room 53 you'll find two altarpieces: the Wilton Diptych, painted in the 14th century by an unknown artist for a young Richard II, and a majestic altarpiece by Jacopo di Cione. Duccio's fragile, jewel- like Annunciation is also here. End your perusal at Room 55 with Paolo Uccello's remarkably bloodless Battle of San Romano.
