The National Portrait Gallery's Ondaatje Wing (named after Christopher Ondaatje, the philanthropist) is well worth exploring, especially as it houses some of the gallery's most interesting portraits—those from the Tudor era and those dating from 1960 to 1990.

Take the escalator up to the dimly- lit Tudor Gallery, where highlights include a portrait of Richard III and the "Ditchley portrait" of Elizabeth I.

In the Balcony Gallery on the next floor down, photographs and paintings from the late 20th century include an immense image of Margaret Thatcher by Helmut Newton and photographs of Julie Christie, Charlotte Rampling and other stars of the 1960s.
