It may seem odd to recommend killing an hour at the new Tate when "kill a week" might be more appropriate. But a single hour can be spent here, and spent well.

Don't dally in the permanent exhibition, which will suck you into a black hole of thronging crowds and confusing "themes". Instead, head straight to Level Four, which houses the temporary exhibits. Here you'll find fewer crowds (due to the entrance fee), edgier art (less Picasso, more Rachel Whiteread) and something to talk about at dinner parties for weeks.

Note that a full hour could also be spent in the museum's store alone.
