Floridita

The canned music of 'Buena Vista Social Club' greeted us as we descended the stairs from Conran's Meza restaurant. Floridita is a joint venture between Conran and the El Floridita bar in Havana; but this is no Hemingway hangout on the Gulf of Mexico, it's more like a bar- nightclub you'd see in a David Lynch movie. Molls teeter by in high heels and mini skirts; disinterested couples gaze past each other; expectant office groups get overly merry while sharing dishes from the Cuban- themed menu. What saves the day are the magnificent cocktails: delightful Daiquiris, ambrosial Mojitos and much more besides, both modern and traditional. Heck, there's even a wine list worth consideration. It's a pity you have to book a dinner table to be assured a seat - and pay a hefty cover charge or entry fee later in the evening
