The International gives off an unmistakable whiff of status and style. Perfectly located diagonally opposite the National Gallery and within sight of Trafalgar Square, this once long- standing branch of City wine merchants Corney & Barrow is gradually forming a cosmopolitan identity all of its own. Well- heeled urbanites drape themselves over the low, brown furniture, or lean on the long bar counter, against an aural backdrop of professional mixers in action. The house champagne, Devaux Grand Reserve, is £8 by the glass, £35 by the bottle; at the other end of the scale Louis Roederer Cristal, at £150 per bottle, is reasonable by other West End standards. Cocktails (£7) of the classic variety are categorised by spirit and bottled beers include Dos Equis and Pilsner Urquell. With a separate adjoining restaurant, it's no surprise that the bar food is first- class: Aberdeen Angus steak sandwich with fon- tina cheese, bacon and rosemary fries (£8.50), or Asian, Mediterranean, vegetarian or seafood platters (£12- £15). The International is very much on the map.
