This outstanding Grade II listed structure was put up around 1730 over William Lamb's river dam (conduit) and, thanks to a sympathetic restoration in the 1960s, the ornate Victorian interior has been left largely intact. The mahogany island bar is edged with etched glass snob screens, complemented by matching mirrors and windows and racing green upholstery, all topped off by an angry red ceiling. The walls are heavy with pictures of Victorian thesps, and behind the serving area is a partitioned non- smoking section that's a nice idea but largely ineffectual. The establishment's sole music- making contraption is a Victorian polython that's occasionally wound up for charitable purposes. Drinkers are a mix of local office and blue collar types, students and academics, tourists and real ale buffs drawn by the superbly kept Young's bitters.
