Once trading under the dastardly name of Devil's Tavern, this pub - now something of a riverside tourist attraction - was built around 1520 and last remodelled in 1777. Flagged floors, low ceilings, giant timbers, fireplaces, pebbled windows and the pewter- topped counter resting on wooden casks are all wonderfully preserved, and add to an atmosphere that's singular, even in these well- sailed waters. The small riverside terrace offers a good watery drinking spot on the rare days without rain, hail or snow, and upmarket modern- meets- trad food is served in the restaurant. The two or three real ales on offer might include London Pride and Young's Special. And oh, what history! The first fuchsia ever to enter the country was exchanged for a noggin of rum here in 1780, and in 1953 an armed robbery on a party being held upstairs resulted in a villain called Scarface (Robert Harrington- Saunders to his prep school chums) being hanged after shooting one of his pursuers. Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys and the notorious 'Hanging Judge' Jeffreys have drunk here too.
