This fabulously ornate confection of carved mahogany and etched glass has been serving the theatre crowd for generations. Beautifully curved banquettes surround the elliptical bar counter, behind which stands a back bar whose intricacy would put the Alhambra to shame - except that the Alhambra probably wouldn't have a teetering pyramid of foreign beer bottles (Budvar, Nastro Azzurro, San Miguel and Corona) piled upon it. Beck's is the draught option. It's really a pub for ale drinkers, though, with Bombardier, Courage Director's, John Smith's and a guest ale (Young's, in this case). The food is solid and traditional - they can't disappoint the significant tourist element - but most certainly a cut above: beef and Theakston pie (£7.45) or Chablis chicken roast (£8.25), followed by apple pie or treacle sponge. An equally ornate back room copes with customer overflow before the curtain rises.
