There's a reason why men of a certain type make a beeline for a pub all but obscured behind lock- ups and warehouses by the wharfs of the Grand Union Canal. 24- hour football? No. Free sex? No. Beer. Ale, in fact, probably one of the finest selection of real ales in all of London. (A string of CAMRA awards lines the small, wooden square bar.) The changing selection of cask ales on draught is chalked up on a board in the corner - suffice to say that you won't find St Austell's Tribute, Crouch Vale Brewers' Gold, Elgood's Black Dog, East Kent Goldings, Pitfield EKG or Dark Star Winter Meltdown in many locals. The lager selection is pretty damn good, too, with draught Bitburger (Paulaner to come, according to the chalky oracle) and a host of Belgian varieties by the bottle. Pasties and hot beef sandwiches accompany the liquid equivalent of rare truffles. Jazz presides over Sunday afternoons and the 'Fat Controller' over Thursday- night quizzes.
