River Thames
London Bridge is one of two bridges that have been built over the River Thames (the other being Westminster Bridge.) London Bridge stretches between Southwark and the City of London itself and is under the jurisdiction of the Greater London Authority. However, maintenance of this key landmark bridge over the River Thames is actually sustained by the Bridge House Trust charity organization. Equally interesting is that it is not the City of London that owns London Bridge but that charity organization. Anyone who knows the full-length version of the rhyme “London Bridge is Falling Down” may have guessed that the existing London Bridge is actually the latest among many London Bridge versions built in the past. It’s meant to last much longer than previous versions.
Westminster Bridge
Aside from London Bridge, the River Thames can be traversed via the Westminster Bridge. This bridge stretches between Westminster and the London area of Lambeth. The architect behind Westminster Bridge is the same person who planned the Palace of Westminster (namely, Charles Barry.) Westminster Bridge is colored mostly green and has been featured in some modern day movies like “28 Days Later” and “101 Dalmatians”. There are other bridges nowadays that can be found in the area (aside from the much older London Bridge) such as the Lambeth Bridge, and the Hungerford footbridge. At present, Westminster Bridge is able to accommodate both foot and vehicular traffic over the River Thames. Westminster Bridge has seven arches which makes it singularly different from the other nearby bridges.
