History of the marathon
One major annual sporting event in London that modern day Londoners look forward to participating in either as runners or spectators is the Flora London Marathon. The history of the marathon stems from the favorable impression of Olympic athlete Chris Brasher of the New York Marathon and its ability to foster camaraderie and friendship among peoples of varying backgrounds. The first Flora London Marathon was held on March 29, 1981. Since the start of the history of the marathon, the race has grown to in capacity from just 7,747 to its current annual capacity of 46,500 runners. The Flora London Marathon is a charitable event (as envisioned by Chris Brasher back in 1981) whose structure was based on that of established American big city marathons.
World Marathon Majors
The Flora London Marathon is one of the five races comprising the World Marathon Majors. The other four races that make up the World Marathon Majors are the Boston Marathon, the Berlin Marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and the ING New York City Marathon. During odd-number years, the IAAF World Championships Marathon is included in the list; while on any years that can be divisible via four, the Olympic Games Marathon is also part of the competition series. The top five winners in, say the Flora London Marathon, will gain corresponding points with a 1st placer will get 25 points, a 2nd placer will receive 15 points, a 3rd placer will gain 10 points, a 4th placer stands to get 5 points while a 5th placer will be awarded 1 point.
