Travellers on a budget who are prepared to give up things like a fancy restaurant in exchange for cosy elegance might like the new Knightsbridge Hotel. This chic B&B is the latest concept of Tim and Kit Kemp, the husband and wife team who run the celebrity- favoured Covent Garden and Charlotte Street hotels. Indeed, the Knightsbridge is rather like a miniature version of these grander establishments. All the rooms reveal the quirky touch of Kit Kemp, an interior decorator. Expect funky wallpaper in some, bold fabrics in others, and Kit's signature plump, canopied beds in all.

Along with the location (a stone's throw from Harrods), the most attractive element is the price: from £135 for a perfectly comfortable single (we liked room 506, on the top floor and flooded with light) or £195 for a luxury double. Breakfast is served in your room, and lunch and dinner can be ordered in. Alternatively, you might choose to snack in the plush drawing room, where book- lined shelves sit next to jazzy light fixtures and contemporary sculpture.
