The Academy

The Academy sprawls across five 18th- century buildings near the British Museum. The hotel's library and a conservatory create a studious, relaxed atmosphere. The modest front door swings with the quiet comings and goings of regulars and the residential feel is compounded by the absence of lifts—the burden of carrying luggage up three floors is saddled by able- bodied, Nordic bellhops.

The rooms are extremely comfortable. Most have a stereo, a sofa and abundant pillows upholstered in florals and plaids. Remote- control air conditioners, fluffy bathrobes (in most rooms), bowls of fresh fruit and tea- and coffee- making facilities complement the picture.
