The Portobello Hotel

Paparazzi book in under pseudonyms to spy on film stars at this immediately appealing villa in Notting Hill, with few business facilities but plenty of unabashed charm. We liked the basement rooms for their private patio gardens. Expect free- standing Victorian baths and four- poster beds.

Business travellers flying in at odd times, or those suffering from jet lag (who pine for breakfast in the middle of the night) will appreciate the 24- hour meal service.

Good value for the price.
