Bar Italia

Still going strong after 55 years, Bar Italia is part of the Soho furniture. All walks of life come here to chat, sip coffee and people- watch. It's open round the clock most days (and gets very busy from midnight onwards), but it can be hard to get a pavement table no matter when you come. The bar is extremely characterful, with a long counter and stools for perching; the left- hand side is more bog- standard café. We're pleased to report that the food is getting better, and though prices aren't the lowest in town, at least you get bags of atmosphere. A recent meal featured excellent panini, including a special of hot cumberland sausage, tomato, shallots and mustard mayo, and a huge, crisp, well- topped rocket, parma ham and mozzarella pizza. A vastly superior choice to the ubiquitous chain cafés. Long may it last.
