On a narrow street in Soho, Andrew Edmunds is easy to miss: with no sign outside, you must hunt for the flickering of candles behind windows.
Inside, you'll find a cosy, bohemian space with rickety wooden tables packed close together and candles shoved in and dripping over empty wine bottles. An informal, literary atmosphere pervades (Edmunds also owns the rare print shop next door).
The cooking blends Modern British and Mediterranean cuisine with panache, and prices are very reasonable (a meal for two can cost under £50). The menu changes daily, but might include starters such as celery and stilton soup or chicken liver parfait with toasted brioche. Main courses are hearty and well conceived. On a recent visit, the rare seared beef fillet with mash, ratatouille and salsa verde was superb.
Book well ahead, and ask for the window table on the ground floor or a corner table downstairs.
