E&O presents the hungry, discerning Londoner with two possible deterrents: it is part of an expanding restaurant chain (which includes Cicada, Eight Over Eight and the Great Eastern Dining Room), and it is popular enough to make booking difficult. But this West London hangout wears its popularity well: the staff are uniformly gracious and welcoming, and the crowded bar hides a quiet, elegant dining room.

The menu traipses enthusiastically through Asia, with dim sum, tempura, sushi, bulgogi, and Singaporean braised ribs jostling for menu space. The dim sum (steamed crab and pea- shoot dumplings) and ribs are both exceptional: the former delicate in construction and flavour, the latter gutsier, with the meat falling off the bones into a plate- lickingly delicious sauce. Even better was the roasted black cod―as expert a fish dish as any in London―with a natural fattiness that was a perfect complement to the sweet, piquant miso sauce.

The east- west desserts are splendid: ginger tiramisu was thick and comforting, while lychee granita, with a shotglass of champagne poured over it, bubbled on the tongue like a sweet and snowy cloud.
