This intimate Chelsea dining room (just 13 tables) is the jewel in the crown worn by the eponymous chef, a tempestuous ex- footballer who presides over some of London's finest kitchens. Gordon Ramsay, the capital's only three- starred Michelin restaurant, was recently voted the fifth best restaurant in the world in a poll of 300 chefs and restaurant reviewers.

Dine here for serious gastronomic pleasures—at equally serious prices. Not everyone will enjoy the hushed ambience (with occasionally fussy service), but Mr Ramsay's cooking is flawless. Starters are particularly inventive. On a recent visit, we tucked into caramelised pig's trotters, stuffed with sweetbreads and topped with foie gras and a fried quail's egg. A seven- course “Prestige” tasting- menu is available for hungry gourmets with deep pockets, and the wine list won't leave you yearning for anything. There is an extravagant cheeseboard.

Book one month in advance. Phone lines open at 9am and tables are snapped up. The restaurant is closed at weekends.
