When Giorgio Locatelli, creator of Zafferano, one of London's most fashionable restaurants, set up shop at the Churchill Hotel in Marble Arch in early 2002, foodies in the capital took note. The Italian chef is renowned for his deft touch with classic dishes, transforming even a simple pasta dish into something swoon- worthy.

The stripped- down décor may feel a little frosty, but the glazed partitions and roomy leather seating make this a sensible place to talk business. And though the look may be minimalist, the food is anything but.

Bufala mozzarella arrived with the sweetest of wild cherry tomatoes and a sprinkling of anchovies; a salad of fagiolini was beefed up with shavings of succulent Jerusalem artichoke. Mains offered a tempting array of fish, game and chicken, and surprisingly generous portions. There is vast selection of vino, including reasonably- priced wines by the glass for modest lunchtime drinkers.
