“Nyonya” describes both the people and cuisine that emerged from the intermarriage of Chinese settlers and Malay natives in Singapore. The food remains relatively unknown, even though it draws influences from across East Asia. This is perhaps because few people emigrate from prosperous little Singapore.
This place, which opened in 2003 by a Malay- Singaporean husband and wife, should change that. Expect affordable, authentic, unpretentious food in a neighbourhood where all three such qualities are thin on the ground. No dish has disappointed your correspondent; standouts include lobak, spicy pork wrapped in tofu skin; otak- otak, a curried fish mousse steamed in banana leaves; curry tumis, sea bream in a sour curry sauce; and Penang laksa, a seafood and noodle soup which a Singaporean diner claimed was the most authentic of its kind she had found in Britain. The decor is plain but chic; the service attentive and informal and the seating communal, at long tables.
