The Riba Café on Portland Place is a useful place to know about. A stone's throw from Oxford Circus, this airy, light- flooded dining room on the first floor of the Royal Institute of British Architects headquarters is perfect for a quiet working breakfast or light lunch. Floor- to- ceiling windows and displays on architectural projects give the place a character of its own.

The breakfast menu (8- 11am), offers plenty of choice. Try the “Healthy kick start”, with fruity muesli and Greek yoghurt, followed by poached eggs, oven- roast tomatoes and freshly- squeezed orange juice. “Champagne brunch” combines eggs Benedict and sautéed field mushrooms with a glass of bubbly. Full English breakfast comes with deliciously crackly, sweet- cured bacon.
