As one might expect of London's oldest restaurant, Rules (which opened in 1798) serves traditional British cooking in a gleaming, dignified Edwardian dining room, where the spirit of Charles Dickens humming over his Yorkshire pudding seems to lurk.

The restaurant is especially good in autumn and winter, when seasonal “feathered and furred” game flies high on the menu. You might dig into grouse with traditional bread sauce, gravy and redcurrent jelly, or feast on venison served with creamed chestnuts and leeks. Swig your beer from the charming silver mugs and finish off with a thoroughly old- fashioned British pudding (such as treacle sponge with custard, or the creamy lemon tart with meringue).

Despite the resolutely old- fashioned décor, the swift, young staff now take orders on handheld gadgets. Look out for a bizarre oil painting of a big- haired Margaret Thatcher, dressed as a warrior, with the Falkland Islands behind her.

Rules is one of the few restaurants in London to ban smoking.
