Don't be fooled by The Cow's exterior: this pub- dining room, owned by Tom Conran (son of Sir Terence) offers anything but standard pie and mash. The décor delights its well- heeled Notting Hill diners with a tip of its hat towards traditional pubs (old Guinness posters and paper tablecloths) and another towards the finer things in life (original Francis Bacon prints, modern British cooking).
James Rix, the chef, combines Italian flourishes with traditional British comfort food and a focus on the sea. You might start with his signature dish, an appetiser of chilled rock oysters from the west of Ireland served with sizzling Guinness sausages and shallot relish. The grilled squid with salsa is also delicious. Mains keep up the pace, with the likes of grilled wild sea trout with Jersey potatoes served over a delicate bed of chives.
Book well in advance, for this is Notting Hill, and seats in the dining room are highly prized. If you can't get a table, try the equally comfortable downstairs bar where you can mix football and people- watching with speciality beers and a surprisingly good bar menu.
