Simultaneously glamorous and cosy, the Ivy's panelled and stained- glass dining room is a London landmark beloved of media celebrities and publishers. Endure the booking struggle and you won't be disappointed.

Alan Bird, the head chef and Des McDonald, the managing director, have created a menu that should please everyone. The choice ranges from homely British comfort food (the salmon fish cakes are perfect) to more exotic flavours (try the Thai- spiced sea bass or curried chicken masala). Staff are friendly and unpretentious, and the atmosphere, once you are seated, is remarkably unstuffy
