One of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, the Chelsea Physic Gardens date from 1673, when Chelsea was a village on London's border. The free- draining soil and south- facing slope made it a choice location for a garden. This remains so, as the surrounding buildings radiate heat in winter and block chilling winds, creating a warmer micro- climate in the middle of London. The garden holds, among other gems, Britain's largest outdoor fruiting olive tree.

The garden covers 3.8 acres along the banks of the Thames, next to the Royal Hospital and just across the river from Battersea. At its centre is its raison d'etre: the pharmaceutical gardens, with its mind- boggling array of plants with medicinal value, both familiar and exotic. The garden is small enough to be manageable but large enough (and far enough off the tourist track) to always afford a secluded corner. Staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and often offer guided tours. Infrequent opening hours (Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, from April to October) mean that you should plan your visit in advance.
