In 1938 Sigmund Freud fled from his home in Vienna after Austria was annexed by Hitler. He settled into this house in South Hampstead, where he continued to write and practice psychoanalysis. He died of cancer a year later, and his daughter Anna, a child psychologist, continued to live here until her death in 1982.

Before exploring the house, watch the video on the first floor, which explains Freud's later years in film clips and interviews.

The rooms are rather claustrophobic, but redolent of the man and the period. In Freud's study, his desk remains forever cluttered with the antiquities and statuettes he loved to collect. His famous couch, which he brought with him from Austria, covered with a bright Oriental rug, is here. So is the chair in which Freud would sit and listen to his patients' “free association”.

In Anna Freud's study on the first floor, a fine collection of photographs shows the Freuds at work and play.
