No other country, except perhaps Japan, takes gardening as seriously as Britain. Kew Gardens is an extensive and well- manicured testament to that passion and obsession. The breadth and history of its collections, and the brilliant intricacy of its landscapes have earned Kew the honour of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although Kew has hosted gardens for well over two centuries, Kew Gardens' current incarnation is principally Victorian. With more than 300 acres of parkland, hothouses, lakes, flower gardens and museums, Kew has something to interest everyone, from avid gardeners to the most asphalt- veined urbanites.

The steep admission fee (£8.50) and its far south- western location make brief visits impractical. But if you have a free afternoon and the weather is pleasant, you could easily spend it here without getting bored. Highlights are too numerous to mention, but do not miss the rose gardens (if in bloom) or the seasonal displays in the Princess of Wales conservatory. Try to see Palm House, which boasts plants from around the tropics, including the world's oldest potted plant.
