To escape the crowds—and make the most of an uncommonly sunny spring—try the Museum of Garden History. This serene spot, in a renovated medieval church next to Lambeth Palace, traces the history of gardening. Visitors learn, for instance, that few of Britain's plants are native to the country (even the common box hedge was a Roman import). They can also wander around a replica of a 17th- century knot garden.

The museum has a delightful little shop, filled with plant- related gifts and books. There is also a small café.
