To get a sense of the breadth of London's history, visit the Museum of London and its well laid- out collection spanning the city's 2,000 years. After examining assorted artefacts of Roman Londinium (don't miss the leather “bikini”), you may want to seek out the death mask of Oliver Cromwell or the model of London Bridge in the Tudor era.

There is a particularly impressive display on the Fire of London, complete with sound and lighting effects. After seeing this, it is sobering to recall that Sir Thomas Bludworth, Lord Mayor of London, did not take the Great Fire seriously when it started, claiming that “a woman might piss it out”.
