One of the few vestiges of pre- Blitz architecture, St Paul's Cathedral is the fifth church to be built on this site since 604 AD—the other four went up in flames. During the second world war, bombs destroyed most of this area. St Paul's emerged intact. It suffered a direct hit in 1940 but the bomb failed to explode.

Completed in 1711 as the world's first Protestant church, St Paul's was designed by Christopher Wren (a ubiquitous architect in the period following the Great Fire of 1666, when he supervised the rebuilding of over 50 churches). Wren's extensive wooden models of the church, including an appropriately named “Great Model”, have been preserved and are on display. The final product barely resembles them.
