An enormous Gothic church founded by Edward the Confessor in 1067,Westminster Abbey offers a marvellous overview of British Royal history. It has been the site for all but two coronations and practically every royal burial for the 500 years between Henry III and George II (monarchs are now buried at Windsor Castle).
Henry III rebuilt the abbey in 1245. The king tore down the original church and created a lavish new structure worthy of pomp and circumstance. Today, the tombs extend out to the cloisters and include those of many non- royals, including, in Poet's Corner, Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton and Robert Browning.
Though it may seem hard to believe, Westminster Abbey is still a place of worship, and attending a service here on Sundays is a good way to experience the place. Services are also free (there is a charge to visit at other times). For service times, consult the website.
