London underground
When Londoners speak of The Tube, this refers to the London underground form of transport for London. Ironically, around 55% of the London underground is aboveground but nevertheless this form of transport for London is the oldest underground transport system in the world, having been formally operational since January 10, 1863. The reason this London underground form of transport for London was nicknamed The Tube was because the tunnels are cylindrical in shape. Many may not realize it but the London double-decker buses you could be familiar with also fall under the jurisdiction of the Transport for London organization that runs The Tube. For years 2006 to 2007, the London underground had more than one billion riders, a jump from the 971 million passengers of 2005-2006.
London bus
The famous red London bus is one of the transport options in London that is managed by the Transport for London agency. Privately-owned bus companies do the actual day-to-day management of each red London bus as subcontractors of the Transport for London agency. The red London bus counts as one of the surface transport services managed by the Transport for London agency. Actually, the Transport for London agency itself manages three main forms of mass transit in London. These are the London underground, London Rail, and then the surface transport options (such as the London bus.) In July 7, 2005, the bus and the London underground systems were hit by attacks that left many casualties. Despite the carnage, the mass transit employees managed to recover quickly.
